The morning of my 30th birthday, I decided I’ve had enough of Indiana to last a lifetime, so I made the decision to move to Sarasota, Florida. I arrived, November 6th, 1986.
Once arriving, I didn’t know what to do or where to go, so I drove to Siesta Beach. I didn’t have a place to live or a job and didn’t really care. I was just happy to be here and would take it one day at a time. I sat on a bench at the main Siesta Beach pavilion with the sun in my face and my toes in the white sand. All of my friends and family thought moving to Florida was crazy. Watching the turquoize blue surf and smelling the salt air reaffirmed my decision and that I had a great new life in front of me. When I visit Siesta Beach I always take a minute to sit on same bench and remember my first few hours in Sarasota County.
